Synopsis:

Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn’t think they’d survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they’re right back to fighting for their lives. Double-crossed and left crippled by the kidnapping of a valuable team member, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz’s cunning and test the team’s fragile loyalties. A war will be waged on the city’s dark and twisting streets―a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of magic in the Grisha world.

I’m not really sure how to review Crooked Kingdom without giving away too much of the story, so I’ll keep my thoughts brief.

  1. All of my favorite Six of Crows characters were back. I loved getting to know them better. All of the relationships really blossomed.
  2. The twists and turns in this story were just as phenomenal as the first book.
  3. It took me “forever” to read Crooked Kingdom because the middle of the story lagged a little bit for me. (Forever was about 5 days.) I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because I don’t read fantasy novels often and get a little bogged down by the fictional worlds? I was enthralled by both the beginning and the ending, though.
  4. I didn’t get every outcome I wanted, but I was completely satisfied with the ending. It was amazing!

Overall, Crooked Kingdom was a terrific conclusion to an epic duology. Fans of the series are sure to love it. I did.

Sugar Free (Sugar Bowl, Book #3)
Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: October 11, 2016

Synopsis:

Sela and Beck’s deliciously sinful tale of sex, lies, and vengeance reaches its explosive conclusion in the final chapter of Sawyer Bennett’s Sugar Bowl trilogy, which began with the novels Sugar Daddy and Sugar Rush.

For years Sela Halstead dreamed of revenge, but the quest for payback has been anything but sweet. Now, once again, she finds herself at the mercy of Jonathon Townsend, his hands crushing the very breath from her body. And even though she escapes with her life, Sela fears she may never recover. In desperate need of shelter and comfort, she runs to the one man she can trust. Beckett North has stood by Sela since the beginning. But can he handle the brutal truth?

Beck will do anything to protect what is his—and make no mistake, Sela belongs to him, heart and soul. The passion between them runs hot, even as their world begins to unravel. With the legacy of his ruthless business partner hanging in the balance, Beck stands to lose everything: his fortune, his family, his freedom. But each touch of Sela’s mouth on his skin, her nails down his back, makes it harder to let her go—and it might not even be his choice to make.

Review:

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

This series is so addicting! Each book ends in a cliffhanger and after that ending in Sugar Rush I had to read Sugar Free immediately. I needed to know what happened!

Sugar Free begins immediately following the cliffhanger in Sugar Rush. The reader gets the answers they needed to know. It also shows just how far Beck is willing to go to keep Sela safe. The sensuality of their relationship continued to be off the charts hot, but the situations they were dealing with took a greater focus than their sex lives.

I continued to love Sela and Beck despite some moments of major stupidity on their parts. Beck continued to be a stand up guy, doing everything he could to keep those he loves safe. I didn’t agree with many of his decisions, but I liked what he was trying to do. Sela’s character felt more helpless in this installment than the others. She lost a little bit of her spark and determination, but it was understandable.

My favorite thing about Sugar Free was that I was so wrapped up in the story I didn’t see the ending coming. I was definitely surprised by how everything wrapped up. I really loved how everything tied up.

The only thing I thought went a little overboard were the multiple time jumps in the epilogue. It was fun to see how life was later for everyone, but I would have been happier with just one major time jump. I guess I’m just not a fan of extending the ending multiple times.

Sugar Free was a great ending to a really fun story. I would highly recommend the Sugar Bowl series if you enjoy books with a lot of sexy time and a little suspense.

Review: Filthy English by Isla Madden-Mills

Filthy English
Series: English, #2

Author: Isla Madden-Mills
Publication Date: July 9, 2016
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Synopsis:

A smokin’ hot British player…
A jilted girl…
One night of mistaken identity…

Two weeks before her wedding, Remi Montague’s fiancé drops her faster than a drunken sorority girl in stilettos. Armed with her best friend and a bottle of tequila, she hops a plane to London to drown her sorrows before fall semester begins at Whitman University.

She didn’t plan on attending a masquerade party. She sure didn’t plan on waking up next to the British bad boy who broke her heart three years ago—the devastatingly handsome and naked Dax Blay. Furthermore, she has no clue how they acquired matching tattoos.

Once back at Whitman together, they endeavor to pretend they never had their night of unbridled passion in London.

But that’s damn hard to do when you live in the same house…

One night. Two damaged hearts. The passion of a lifetime.

*A modern love story inspired by Romeo and Juliet*
**no one dies in the writing of this novel**

After finishing the first book in the English series, I immediately began reading Filthy English. I had to. I fell in love with Dax in Dirty English, and I desperately needed to read his story. I’m so happy I did!

I was crazy about Filthy English! This second chance romance was filled with so many great things. The writing was just as captivating as the first book. I was immediately drawn into the story and kept on edge waiting to find out what would happen. I wasn’t expecting the story to unravel the way it did based on the synopsis, but I liked how little by little Dax and Remi’s story unfolded. Their connection was filled with drama and passion. I loved the lively banter between them. It was so much fun! I was rooting for them the entire book.

Dax was the star of this book. He wasn’t who I was expecting. Dax seemed so happy-go-lucky in Dirty English. Hidden behind his smiling exterior was a deeper, troubled man. He had some growing up and self-examining to do. Remi was the perfect woman to help him with that.

Remi had her life planned out, but her fiancé ditching her before their wedding had everything spinning out of control. She could no longer compartmentalize or deny her true feelings. I loved the way admitting to the truth to herself allowed her to become who she truly was. There was freedom in giving into the lust she felt for Dax.

Dax and Remi weren’t the only characters I loved. I really enjoyed the addition of Remi’s friend Lulu and Dax’s cousin Spider. I’m hoping I’ll get another English book with them in it! I was also happy to be reunited with Declan and Elizabeth for a couple of scenes in this one. I liked getting to see their relationship through Dax’s eyes.

Filthy English was a  wonderful addition to the English series. I loved it even more than the first book and I’m really hoping there’s more to come in this series!

Synopsis:

A scarred fighter.
A girl with rules.
One night of unbridled passion.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Bennett: she’s smart as a whip, always in control, and lives by a set of carefully crafted rules. She’s learned the hard way that people you love the most always hurt you in the end.

But then she meets Declan Blay, the new neighbor at her apartment complex.

A tattooed British street fighter, he’s the campus bad boy she’ssupposed to avoid, but when he saves her from a frat party gone bad, all her rules about sex and love fly out the window.

She gives him one night of unbridled passion, but he longs for more.

With only a cardboard-thin wall separating their bedrooms, he dreams of possessing the vulnerable girl next door forever.

One night. Two damaged hearts. The passion of a lifetime.

*A modern love story inspired by Pride and Prejudice*

I kind of loved this book. Actually, there’s no kind of about it. Dirty English had a strong emotional pull that sucked me in and kept me reading. I read it in one evening. That’s how good the writing was. The nods to Pride and Prejudice were cool and added a unique, fun aspect to the story. I absolutely loved reading this NA romance.

While the writing may have sucked me in, my favorite thing about Dirty English was the characters. The connection between Elizabeth and Declan was fierce. I could feel the intensity of their feelings throughout the entire book. They had sexual chemistry that was off the charts, but what really got me was the sweetness of their emotional connection. They just got each other. It was beautiful.

I also adored the supporting characters. Dax was probably my favorite one of them. He was so happy-go-lucky. I loved the way he tried to get Declan all riled up. He just added so much fun to the story!

I only have a couple of gripes about this book. First, I have to admit the story was fairly predictable. I knew what was coming the entire time I was reading. I loved the characters so much I could easily look past it, but other might not be able to. Second, Blake. While I liked what his friendship with Elizabeth brought to the story, the way he and Shelley acted behind her back didn’t sit so well with me. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I was a little concerned. Maybe I just need a Blake book to explain it all! (That would awesome! Hint, hint Ms. Madden-Mills!)

Dirty English was a great NA read. It had all the things I would expect from the genre. It was emotional, angsty, fun and sexy. I loved it so much, I immediately downloaded the second book in the series.

Jane isn’t entirely sure that Cinderella got such a raw deal. Sure, she had a rough start, but didn’t she eventually land a prince and a happily-ever-after? Until a party and a broken shoe incident leave Jane wondering if princes—or at least, a certain deliciously hunky billionaire—maybe do exist.

Except Brock Wellington isn’t anyone’s dream guy. Hell, a prince would never agree to be auctioned off in marriage to the highest bidder. Or act like an arrogant jerk—even if it was just a façade. REVIEW:

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

I read and loved Rachel Van Dyken’s New Adult series Ruin, but I hadn’t had the chance to read any of her adult contemporaries yet. I was excited to get the chance with The Bachelor Auction.

The Bachelor Auction was a fun Cinderella retelling. It didn’t follow the plot to a T, but I liked how it slightly resembled it. Rachel Van Dyken’s writing was just as good as I remembered it. It was cute and funny, but also touched on deeper emotions. The main characters in this story were pretty messed up. Each was dealing with their own pain and set of problems.

Jane was a very sweet woman. That was a good and bad thing. Good in that it made people like her (including me), but bad in that it made her a pushover. She let her sisters take advantage of her and ruin her self-confidence. I loved watching her grow throughout the book and learn to stand up for herself and what she wanted.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Brock. I understood the demons he was fighting, but his hot and cold attitude drove me nuts. I don’t think I would have been as understanding as Jane was. I would have been done with him long before he straightened himself out.

What really made this book were the supporting characters. There was an adorable meddling grandfather, hilariously rowdy farm animals, and witty twin brothers. The twin brothers were the best part of the entire thing. Their horny commentary had me laughing so hard. I hate to say it, but I kind of wished Jane would have run away with one of them…But I know their stories are coming up, so at least I’ll get more of them. I can’t wait to find out who they fall for!

Overall, The Bachelor Auction was a good start to what is bound to be a great new series. I’m really looking forward to reading what comes next for the Wellington family.

Series: Heiress Series, #1

Author: Natalie Rios

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

Synopsis:

Anthony Carter has not had it easy in life. In a matter of months, he lost his mother to cancer along with his much coveted spot in a prestigious doctoral program. Swimming in debt, he’s been forced to move back to his hometown in rural Montana and take whatever job he can find. A drunken weekend in Vegas is exactly what he needs to help him forget his problems.

A recent break-up with her boyfriend of nearly a decade has left straight-laced Liz Rockwell disillusioned with love and in desperate need of a vacation. She gets more than she bargained for when one drunken night at a Vegas bar results in her being married to Anthony. Embarrassed by her lapse in judgment, Liz is ready to make this whole night just go away. A quickie divorce seems like the best solution to their problem, until Anthony realizes who Liz really is.

Known in the media as the Candy Heiress, billionaire Liz is the answer to Anthony’s prayers. All he has to do is convince her to write him a check. Unfortunately, Liz is not one to be easily intimidated or coerced. Discovering the Rockwell family secret may be Anthony’s only hope. But the more time he spends with the intelligent and tenacious Liz, the more he realizes their chapel wedding may not have been such a drunken mistake after all…

When Natalie Rios asked me if I would read her début novel How to Catch an Heiress I was excited. I love the whole waking up in Vegas married trope. There’s always a crazy fun story to lead to the waking up married thing. How to Catch an Heiress had one of those, but it also had something that made it unique. It had an heiress who could fix the groom’s problems.

When Liz and Anthony wake up married after a night of Vegas shenanigans, they agree they can’t stay married. They’re complete strangers who live across the country from each other. But when Anthony discovers Liz is an heiress, he realizes he shouldn’t be so quick to terminate their marriage. Anthony has a ton of debt and Liz can pay it. All he has to do is convince her to write him a check, and threatening to prevent their divorce might just do it.

I was really surprised by the writing in How to Catch an Heiress. It didn’t feel like a début novel at all. The story immediately caught my attention and never let go. Despite being a slow-burn romance, it moved at a very fast-paced. There were also a ton of funny moments peppered throughout the story. I smiled a lot while reading it.

I loved the characters. Liz and Anthony were perfect together — even when they were at war. The way they each tried to “win” was so much fun to read. I also loved seeing them realize that maybe what they wanted wasn’t what they needed. It was such a cute love story!

The supporting characters were pretty awesome, too. Liz’s family and friends were hilarious! I can’t even imagine meeting them the way Anthony did. I can’t wait to see them again in the rest of the series.

My only complaint about the whole story was when Anthony approached Liz after leaving Vegas. For someone who was supposed to be so smart, he acted so dumb. I didn’t really get that. It worked out for the story in the end, but it just felt weird at the time I was reading it.

Overall, I really enjoyed How to Catch an Heiress. I would recommend it to contemporary romance readers who are looking for a new favorite author. I can only imagine Natalie Rios’ will become an even more talented writer as time goes on. I’m very excited to read the next book in the series.

Excerpt:
Watching him squirm was fun, almost too much fun.
A muscle in his jaw twitched and if his teeth were clenched any tighter, they would probably break. He oh-so-gently set my card down on the entryway table, as if it were a grenade that needed to be handled with great care. When his gaze met mine again, I could see the worry in his eyes. It was finally hitting him that he was up the creek without a paddle.
“This,” I made whirling motion with my index finger, “is all so very predictable.”
That had his eyes narrowing, anger quickly replacing worry. “Predictable,” he snorted. “You don’t know anything about me. And what little you do know is hardly enough for you to be able to predict anything about me.”
“Oh, but I do know about you. Quite a bit, in fact. Shall I tell you what my research on you has turned up?”
His eyes and mouth widened with shock. “You researched me?”
“I’m the Candy Heiress, born to a family worth billions. Did you seriously think I would wake up suddenly married to a stranger and not immediately look into his criminal history? His life story?” Studying him, his expression told me that’s exactly what he’d thought. The prick. “Let’s see…Where should I begin? Perhaps chronologically?”
“Get on with it. You probably don’t have much,” he replied gruffly. “I was only a bit surprised because I’m not as searchable as you are, princess.”
The nickname had me sending him a withering look. “Don’t call me that.”
“I’ve Googled myself before. There’s hardly anything out there.” His words were like a gauntlet being thrown, a challenge I could not resist accepting. Like most people, he was underestimating me. A huge mistake on his part and a notion I was happy to disabuse him of.

EXCERPT:
She guides me to the side, out of the way of all the energetic children. Energetic is the politically correct way to describe them. Demon children is not.

“I’m aware you’re friends with Eva Banks.”

“Yes, is she okay?” I ask, a little worried.

“Of course.” Rita waves her hand in front of her face, dismissing my worry. “She’s done very well for herself and made quite the donation to start a foundation in honor of her mom, who used to volunteer here.”

“Oh, how wonderful.”

Eva and I know each other from school. When she was getting her master’s, I was completing my bachelor’s, but we were part of the same dorky art clubs and became good friends. Something tragic happened to her parents when she was young, but I never went into great detail about it with her, because frankly it’s none of my business. But I do know she and her brother donate as much time here as possible.

Yes, her brother . . .

Sigh.

Bodi Banks, Olympic royalty, masterful swimmer, gorgeous human being, and the most closed-off and quiet man you will ever meet.

The man is incredible.

I’ve spoken two sentences to him the entire time I’ve known Eva, and they didn’t generate much conversation.

One being: “You’re Bodi Banks, the swimmer.”

Well, duh, Ruby, he knows who the hell he is. You try coming up with something intelligent to say when a beast of a man is standing in front of you, his denim blue eyes staring through you.

Second time: “So you like swimming, huh?”

Another classic question coming directly from a bumbling idiot.

He politely grimaced at me, yes, grimaced, and walked away. It was humiliating. But, I always tell myself, it could have been worse. I’ve been known to throw a little fun punch here and there, so the fact that I held my fist at my side instead of saying, “So, you like swimming, huh?” while tapping his shoulder is a feat in itself.

Point to me!

But yeah, Eva’s brother is one of those mythical men you read about and follow on Instagram, wondering if he really does exist or if someone is Photoshopping your average Joe to make all women salivate over a little IG newsfeed.

Let me state for the record: he’s real. He’s so real I may have accidently poked him during my first encounter when I pointed out who he was . . . to him.

“You’re Bodi Banks, the swimmer.” *Pokes finger to chest*

I’m awkward as hell. At least I didn’t poke his nipple and then make it hard. Lord knows if that happened, I would have laughed and pointed at the hardened tip while restraining my fingers from flicking it once more.

On a daily basis his skin is completely bare for everyone to see, tan and defined, only covered up by a minuscule piece of spandex. There is no denying his sex appeal.

I hate to admit it, but I’m head over heels infatuated with him.

There is one HUGE problem though. His achingly gorgeous abs, inked up arm, and cocky swagger belong to my boss, the high-profile, reality star bitch from hell and certified heinous human being, Bellini Chambers.

What I think is going to be an easy job assisting a glorified wench turns into a cluster f*ck of epic proportions.

About the Author:

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!
